It’s no secret, Lupita Nyong’o is having a moment.
Floating down red carpets in majestic regality, shaking spirits in rousing films, and humbly leading the way for women of a neglected shade…it’s hard not to love Lupita. In honor of her Best Supporting Actress win last night and her splendor all awards season, here are 10 reasons we can’t help but love Academy Award winning Lupita Nyong’o:
1. She is gracious
“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s…And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey, for her guidance.”- Oscar acceptance speech
2. She is college educated & ivy league trained
Lupita graduated from Hampshire College in Massachusetts with a degree in film studies. After working as a production assistant for many films, she graduated from Yale’s School of Drama.
3. Her brother is her bestie
Family first! Lupita is the second of six children. She brought her brother Peter as her date to many awards, including the Oscars, and gave him a shout out during her acceptance speech.
4. Her accent
Lupita’s soft spoken, delicate, english accent only enhances her effortless elegance.
5. She is a red carpet designer’s dream
“Her fashion choices are consistently brilliant: directional, gorgeous, and always surprising yet entirely appropriate,” said Sally Singer, creative director of digital at Vogue.” – The Grio
She’s also one of the new faces of Miu Miu’s Spring 2014 campaign.
6. Her skin tone
Her rich, even, and deep skin tone is fairly uncommon amongst the ‘it’ girls of Hollywood, making Lupita a trailblazer for women of color but even more specifically dark skinned women.
7. She rocks natural hair
“When I was in my teens I dyed my hair all sorts of colors; blue and maroon. And then I realized that I was probably going to end up bald by the time I was 40. So I stopped doing all those things and finally decided to love it the way it is.” – Pride Magazine
8. Her performance in ‘12 Years a Slave’
“I was heartbroken by her story. I just felt so sorry for her. I recognized then that I had a lot of work to do to get to a point where I could play her, because feeling that kind of sympathy for someone is no way to actually inhabit them.. She was just simple and she was trying to get by on a daily basis. She’s not sentimental about her pain. I had to have the same kind of attitude.” – IMDB
9. Lupita is an Oscar Winner
She is the 6th black actress in the academy awards 86 year history to win best supporting actress, and the first Mexican born actress to win.
10. Lupita is a role model
“And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.” – Essence Black Women in Hollywood speech
Now, don’t you love her too?
